I was recently reflecting on the journal prompt, “What are your personal and creative rituals, if any?” [based on an interview with Ashley Kane.] It really got me thinking about the importance of daily routines that spark joy. These seemingly simple day-to-day routines are what build our lives. So today, let’s talk about some of my personal and creative routines.
Personal Routines
- Daily walks
- Morning Pages (adopted from The Artist’s Way), journaling
- Scripture & devotional
- Barre, yoga, any gentle movement
- Quiet morning time with coffee
- Picking up flowers, lighting candles, playing music
I’m noticing as I write these, that many of them go hand-in-hand with my creative routines. It’s taken time to build these routines, but I really try to fill as much of my day with simple joys. This is hard with a tight schedule, but I prioritize what I need to, especially movement and quiet time.
Creative Routines
- Magazines, podcasts, design books
- Artist’s Dates (adopted from The Artist’s Way)
- Scrolling Pinterest
- Creating moodboards on Canva- this has become a new favorite 😊
- Spending time outdoors in nature
Building Your Own Routines
What simple activities spark joy for you? Maybe morning coffee, journaling, or reading are important? Try to incorporate these into your work week. I’m in a group working through The Artist’s Way book, which is led by my wonderful friend, Emily. We meet weekly to reflect and talk. This book has completely changed my mindset on implementing creative routines. They are not just for “artists,” rather everyone positively benefits from tapping into their creative side. I’m curious, what’s a hobby or activity you’ve been wanting to try? Make it a goal to try it within this next month. Next week I’m trying an acrylics workshop! 😊
